The image of the Assumption of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is a symbol of peace and reconciliation. The Apostles Peter and Paul were two leading personalities of our Church. The image of Their Ascension either as a “historically” witnessed meeting of the two leading Apostles in Rome or as a symbolic representation was very popular and was imprinted very early on in various forms in Byzantine art. Typical examples are the icon in the Vatopedi Monastery, the Karakallos Monastery and the Patmos Monastery. This image is a symbol of ecumenical peace and reconciliation, a symbol of faith and unity of the Church and at the same time presents us with the equally important role of the two figures in our Church, a fact that is strengthened by their celebration on June 29 each year.
