Saint Irene

This image is handmade hagiography (hand-painted) with real gold leaf on carved wood. It has the signature of the hagiographer and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Agia Irini, whose popular name was Penelope, was born in the city of Madedlon in Persia and her parents were the prefect Likinios and the noble Likinia. Emperor Basil II, the Saint was martyred by beheading. She is the patron saint of the Greek Gendarmerie and today of the Greek and Cypriot Police. The Holy Cross of Agia is kept in the Holy Temple of Agia Irini in Riganokampos, Patras.
Our church honors Her memory on May 5 of each year.
