The Virgin of Vladimir (Russian: Влади́мирская ико́на Бо́жией Ма́TERI) is a Byzantine Christian icon depicting the Virgin Mary with the Divine Child. It dates back to the 12th century AD. and is an early example of the hagiographic type of the Merciful Virgin. It is one of the most famous works of art in Russia and has great historical and cultural value. Many Russians consider the image a national talisman and have attributed to it
abundance of miracles during its history. After its almost total destruction, during the 13th century, the icon has been restored at least 5 times. The icon was painted in Constantinople, by an unknown personartist and was sent to Kiev as a gift, before being transferred to the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir. The icon is said to have Moscow Patriarchate, which ended with the transfer of the image to the Church of Saint Nicholas of Tolmachi, which is part of the gallery. The church functions simultaneously as a Christian temple and as a museum. The image remains there to this day and is accessible only through an underground passage, which connects the gallery with the church, where services are still held.
