St. John of Climacus testifies about his personal guardian angel: “Every time I wanted to go higher in the spiritual life, the angel appeared and enlightened me.” Basil the Great writes: “the angel will not be removed from us, unless we remove him with our wicked deeds. Just as smoke drives away bees and bad smells drive away doves, so our stinking sin drives away from us the angel who protects our lives.”
