Saint Demetrius was born around 280-284 AD and martyred against the emperors Diocletian and Maximilian in 303 or 305 or 306 AD. Saint Demetrius is mentioned that his body was buried at the place of his martyrdom while myrrh was gushing from his grave, which is why he is also called a myrrh-thrower. In the Byzantine icons you are presented as a horseman on a red horse stepping on the unbeliever Lyas. Today Agios Dimitrios is honored as the patron saint of Thessaloniki. Rarely has a Saint been identified with a city as much as Saint Demetrius with Thessaloniki. He was considered the guardian of the city against the Slavs, the Avars, the Turks and other barbarians. It is no coincidence that the Greek army liberated the city on the day of the feast of the Saint, a fact that was considered a miracle.
His memory is honored by our church on October 26 of each year.
